In 2020 many of us were forced to work from home, it was an experiment as well as new reality where we found ourselves without even having a chance to try it out before.

Governments created lockdowns and most of us were told to work from home.

Loneliness is one of the downsides to remote work. We are still expected to do certain tasks and “deliver” our work but sometimes we may find ourselves a little depressed, there is no small talks, there is no colleagues, there is no a coffee on a way to work, there is no friendly coffee shop staff we use to have a chit chat with…

Instead we wake up, do our morning routine and boot our computer to start working in one of our dedicated bedrooms, once we finish for a day, there is a quick transition to normal home life with no interaction with people which are out of our nest.

If you are an introvert, this situation will improve the way you work, you will appreciate saved time and human contact downgraded to the very minimum. If you are an extrovert instead, you will have a great difficulty to find yourself into this new reality. Is there a solution for people who feel lonely when working remotely, yes there is – you need to use exactly the same tools you are using to do your work.

You have all these work tools such as Skype, Zoom, FaceTime and so on, why not using that to communicate with friends, colleagues and so on, these days you can even play a multiplier game while talking with someone over the internet or phone.

You can create personal profiles on all these services so when work is finished for the day, you log out from your working profile and join the personal one. This way you can have socialising experience which is still far better than not having one at all. You can see your friends live, you can talk to them, you can play with them ! You have more time in your hands by not travelling to and from work so really you can use this time to improve your social life.

What is your method to fight with loneliness while working remotely? Does it bother you much?
